6.6.26 Lancaster, PA—Katie Izzo of Flagstaff, AZ spent the week in Central Pennsylvania after winning the Delightful Run for Women 5K in Albany, NY the previous Saturday. She did workouts on the York Heritage Rail Trail and both the York College and F & M tracks. She also ran the Red Rose Run course with members of the Red Rose Track Club on Tuesday night prior to the race. It all paid off for Izzo; she shattered the course record by running 26:00. While the clock had 25:59 and the photo shows her clearly across the finish mat, for road races, times with hundredths of seconds are rounded to the full second. Kristen Bankes of Reading held her old record of 27:17 for 47 years.
Paige Stoner, also of Flagstaff but a Pennsylvania native, was also well under the record; she finished second in 26:55. Diane Neubauer of Ambler, PA was third in 27:58. Maggie Liebich of Boise, Idaho was fourth in 28:18. Anna Vess of Ann Arbor, MI was fifth in 28:52. Allison Emmons of Hockessin, DE was top master in 29:21; she was eleventh in the deep field.
Hamza Chahid of Morocco, who also recently ran for Wingate University near Charlotte NC, was the men’s champion and new record holder, winning in 23:06. James Quattlebaum of Greenville, SC was second in 23:12. Sam Chelanga of Fayetteville, NC was third in 23:27, and at 41, the first master. The top three men broke the 1992 record of 23:37 set by Chris Fox.
JP Flavin of Ann Arbor, MI was fourth in 23:47 after a long drive from Michigan. Josh Izewski of Doylestown was fifth in 23:57. Izewski won the Broad Street 10 Miler in early May.
The race started in 1977; yours truly ran it and could have done it in 2026, but photos are a better contribution to the running community. The $5000 first place prize, plus the $1977 course record bonus brought attention and a very deep field of talented athletes to Lancaster. Thanks to Mayor Jaime Arroyo and his staff in making the fifty-year anniversary race special. Strong advertising surely helped as well; the number of finishers was 1939, nearly double of the 979 in 2025.
