Pittsburgh, PA, May 7, 2023—Wesley Kiptoo of Kenya defended his title at the UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon and lowered his course record to 1:01:21. Kiptoo, who ran collegiately at Iowa State, won easily.
Buze Diriba of Ethiopia won in 1:10:45. Diriba had a very close battle with Carrie Verdon of Boulder, CO who was second in 1:10:47. Jackie Gaughan of Boston, Massachusetts was third in 1:11:31. Former Shippensburg University standout Neely Gracey was fourth in 1:12:56, just ahead of defending champ Caroline Rotich of Kenya who was clocked at 1:12:56.
James Ngandu of Kenya, who trains in Columbus, Ohio, was second in 1:02:12. Dominic Ondoro of Kenya was third in 1:02:32. Lawrence Kipkoech of Kenya was fourth in 1:02:40. Chase Weaverling of Boulder, CO was sixth and top American in 1:05:10. Sergio Reyes of Palmdale, CA was top master and ninth overall in 1:06:26. Ngandu and Reyes both raced in Philadelphia’s Broad Street Run 10 Miler on the previous weekend.
The Sunday races, the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon and the UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon, had over 20,000 participants.
