May 7, 2023, Pittsburgh, PA—Margo Malone had never run her hometown marathon, and she had an awesome day with a 2:41:58 victory, setting a personal best in front of family, friends, and coworkers.  Her last professional race had been the Olympic Marathon Team Trials in Atlanta, February 2020, after which she moved back home to Pittsburgh and began working full time at UPMC Enterprises. She continued to train, and ran local races “for fun.”

Rachel Brown of Philadelphia was second in 2:48:31.  Anna Balouris, also from Pittsburgh, was third in 2:51:37.  Laura Galeazzo of Webster, NY was fourth in 2:54:09.  Stephanie Garland of Garden City, NY was fifth in 2:54:50. 2022 Columbus Marathon champ Sarah Biehl of Columbus, OH was sixth in 2:56:11.  Biehl also won the JFK 50 Miler in November. Sara Zambotti of Shelocta, PA was top master and eleventh overall in 3:06:06.

Tyler McCandless of Fort Collins, CO,  who earned three degrees in Meteorology from Penn State University, including a PhD, won the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon in 2:16:10.  McCandless ran a wicked negative split (2nd half almost seven minutes faster than the first) and pulled away on an uphill during mile 19.

Peterson Muthoni of Kenya was second in 2:16:54. Nick Wolk grew up locally in Peters Township in Pittsburgh’s South Hills and raced for University of Pittsburgh. He finished in 3rd place in 2:19:11 in his very first marathon.  Giovanni Grano of Italy was fourth in 2:22:05. Colin Martin of Pittsburgh was fifth in 2:26:32.  AJ Kelly of Altoona, PA was top master and tenth overall in 2:36:24.

We were impressed by how well organized the marathon and all the events were. There were 20,000 participants and 300,000 spectators. The marathon ran through 14 Pittsburgh neighborhoods. Kudos to the City of Pittsburgh and to P3R in staging all of the weekend events throughout the city.
