November 5, 2022, New York, NY—2022 USATF 5K Road Championships/Abbott Dash to the Finish Line
With an extremely competitive field, Flagstaff, AZ residents Weini Kelati and Abdihamid Nur both won rather easily. Kelati, who was born in Eritrea and ran for the University of New Mexico, won in 15:14, successfully defending, and improving on, her 2021 title. Nur was born in Mogadishu, Somalia and raised in Phoenix, AZ; he won in 13:24. He would have had a larger margin of victory, had he not almost followed a race vehicle off course. Nur, who ran at University of Northern Arizona, laughed off the near miscue, and appreciated having won the race.
Erika Kemp of Brookline, MA won the race for second in a four-woman sprint to the finish, running 15:30. Emily Infeld of Portland, OR was third, also in 15:30. Annie Rodenfels of Boston was fourth in 15:31. Taryn Rawlings of Flagstaff, AZ was fifth in 15:32. 29 women finished the pro-women’s race.
Hillary Bor, the USA Olympian based in Colorado Springs, was second in 13:29. Kirubel Erassa of Colorado Springs was third in 13:37. Ahmed Muhumed of Tallahassee, FL was fourth in 13:39. Alec Basten of St. Louis, MO was 13:40. Basten won the 10K in Baltimore in October. 28 pro-men finished the Abbott Dash to Finish Line 5K. 11,005 total runners finished the 5K, many of them perhaps using the race as a shake-out run prior to the New York City Marathon.
