by Clay Shaw

March 13, 2022, Lafayette, LA—Chris Lapoint, 48, of Youngsville, LA won the Zydeco Marathon in 2:48:26 winning by nearly six minutes.  Jessica Hiskey, 27, of Oxford, MS won in 3:16:54, by nearly 21 minutes.

Grant Gallatin of Mankato, MN was second in 2:54:03.  Dave Dixon of Tucson, AZ was third overall in 2:54:23, as masters runners took first and third overall.  Dixon is 51.

Melissa Landry of Baton Rouge, LA was second in 3:38:09.  Jayne Lydiatt, also of Baton Rouge was third in 3:43:27.  Carney Anne Nasser of New Orleans was top master and sixth overall in 3:51:26.

156 completed the marathon.  395 finished the companion half-marathon.  Sean Bezder of Rayne, LA (1:11:53), and Courtney Brossuand of Arnaudville, LA (1:22:03) were the champions.  Only two men finished before Broussand.  313 runners completed the 5K which was held the day prior to the distance races.

For yours truly it was my 209th marathon and Karen’s 126th.  At 70, it could be our last, who knows.  It was nice to experience a new part of Louisiana. Small marathons usually have a friendlier vibe. Zydeco was just that, and we highly recommend this race as a choice for Louisiana.  On my two trips around the 50 states, and Karen’s one trip, it was New Orleans twice.  We did Big Beach Marathon in Gulf Shores, AL in January, after a similar two in Birmingham.  LOL, I guess Mississippi is next after two in Jackson.

Kudos to race director Mike Howard, his wife, and an incredible race committee and volunteers. We also noticed the wonderful participation and cooperation of the city police, who staffed the entire course to keep runners, volunteers, and residents safe for many hours. We loved the finisher medals, that looked like record albums (in the Zydeco theme).

While you’re there for the marathon, check out Louisiana Swamp Tours, a small-boat tour with Wendy.
