By Clay Shaw

YORK, PA, JULY 3, 2021—Dalton Hengst, who is a collegiate runner at Ole Miss (University of Mississippi), won by over three minutes in the Shoe House Five-Mile race in a course record time of 24:54.  Jake Menchey of York was second in 28:27.  Tim McConville of Brooklyn, NY was third and top masters runner in 29:30.  Elijah Eisenberger of York was fourth in 29:33.  Marathon runner Benjamin Abeles of Felton was fifth and second master in 29:40.  Thaddeus Cwiklinski from Cleveland, OH ran an even 30:00 to place sixth overall.

Youngsters Leah Navarro (age 11) of Seven Valleys who won in 31:58, and Lyla Eltz (age 10) of Hanover who was second in 33:07, had been dominating the York Winter Series mile races for years.  Colleen Deignan of Harrisburg, the 2020 women’s champ was third in 34:41.  Haley Green of York and Central York HS, was fourth in 35:23.  Susan Lewis of York Haven was fifth in 35:49.  Kelly McKinley of York was sixth overall and top master in 36:33.

135 runners finished the 2021 event  which is normally held on July 4.  Likely the holiday dynamic vs a busy Saturday hurt the attendance in 2021, with the Ephrata 5 Miler also opting to move off the July 4 to the Saturday date.  Weather wasn’t a factor, as it was actually perfect for running.
