WHEELING, WV—The 21st running of the Debbie Green Memorial 5K, held August 4, takes place in downtown Wheeling along the banks of the Ohio River. Always competitive up front, a large pack of men jockeyed for position on the turns and hills of the downtown streets. Kiprop Mutai of Dallas, TX and Kenya took charge on the long flat out-and-back portion of the course and won in 14:12. Cyrus Korir of Chapel Hill, NC and Kenya was second in 14:14. 2017 champ Simion Chirchir of Kenya was third in 14:17. Juris Silenicks of Pittsburgh was top USA runner in 15:14 and sixth overall. Rich Romano of Wheeling WV was top Masters in 17:59 placing 18th among men.
Victoy Chepngeno of Lansing, Michigan, and Kenya was top woman in 15:39. Fellow Kenyans Delvine Meringor (15:41) and Susan Jerotich (16:18) rounded out the podium. Ann Mazur of Pittsburgh was the top USA female in 18:27 placing seventh overall. Sherri Martin (56) of West Alexander, PA was the top Masters in 21:32.
Kudos to race director Ron Green and his staff who put their hearts into the event which raises funds in the fight against leukemia.
