Amebaw and Seare win World Road Running Championships 5K

Copenhagen, Denmark, 9.19.2026—Likina Amebaw of Ethiopia won by seven seconds to win the World Athletics Road Racing Championships 5K in 14:41. Caroline Gitonga of Kenya was second in 14:48. Rose Davies of Australia was third in 14:50, in a new national and area record. Tayla Kavanagh of South Africa was fourth in 14:51. Aleshign Baweke of Ethiopia was fifth in 14:53. The USA athletes were Allie Ostrander, twelfth in 15:10, and Courtney Frerichs who was seventeenth in 15:25. Ethiopia won the team title, Australia was second, and Kenya was third.

Dawit Seare of Ethiopia had a very strong finishing kick to win in 12:56, setting a new national record. Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway was second on his 26th birthday in 12:59, also setting a new national record. Saymon Amanuel of Eritrea was third in 13:00. Ky Robinson of Australia was fourth in a new national and area record of 13:04. Keneth Kiprop of Uganda was fifth in 13:04. Drew Hunter of the USA set a new national record of 13:14. Mike Foppen of Netherlands set a national record of 13:15. Darrah McElhinney of Ireland set a new Irish national record of 13:22 and Arturs Medveds of Latvia, the 2023 host, set a new Latvian record of 13:30.
