Poet’s Corner for April and May 2025

by George Hancock

April 2025

Tuesday brings us April First
Arriving in a soggy burst
April showers and all that
Means running in a good hat.

April continues our spring
Every day we hear birds sing
Birds fly by every which way
As we enjoy this April day.

April is also Easter season
A day marked for good reason
Although Easter may be late
Easter celebrations are first rate.

Roadside vegetation turns green
Creating a delicious spring scene
Running past the green is nice
Please get outside is my advice.

Steadily, the weather turns warm
And we see so many critters swarm
During our early morn April run
Soon touched by the spring sun.

An April run pleases this guy
Running beneath a dawn sky
Spring adds color to our roads
Creating delightful episodes.

Daffodils

April brings us many daffodils
A spring plant creating thrills
The gold and white color’s nice
Enjoy then now is my advice.

Out here, daffodils will grow
Along the road in a tidy row
Adding colors to my scene
Along with that April green.

Running early, I run by them
Mother Nature utters an Ahem
Do you like this April show?
Daffodils have a spring glow.

Many folks have them in the yard
Growing daffodils is not that hard
It seems daffodils are so many
Thrilling my early run plenty.

Blooming daffodils a great trend
I often wish spring not to end
But daily life means moving on
With more to see at our dawn.

Green and yellow colors appear
This road scene few will ever fear
We’re moving on in an April mile
With spring views making me smile.

Easter Eggs?

These days, the Avian Bird flu
Has created an expensive snafu
Sick chickens that lay those eggs
Are growing meaning egg doglegs.

Now, I’m a cereal breakfast guy
So that egg price makes no sigh
In me as I read the mad views
From shoppers paying their dues.

I eat maybe two in four weeks
So, this expense never peaks
Cereal is perfect for my meal
The low cost is the real deal.

Aprils brings the Easter season
Celebrated for a valid reason
Colorful Easter eggs a part
But is buying them smart?

I guess Easter eggs are gone
I mull running before dawn
Chocolate eggs do taste good
Better than chewing on wood.

What about the Easter race
Will eggs create a sad face?
One day the price will fall
Till then, avoid that wall!

On a Spring Run

My thoughts on a spring run
Are influenced by the new sun
Warmer temps are always nice
Much better than winter’s ice.

Yes, there’s winter beauty outside
So, we have no reason to hide
Yes, outside on a spring run
We find lots of daily fun.

By late April I see lots of green
Creating a perfect roadside scene
The new growth is a spring sign
Eliminating that cruel wintry whine.

Dry snow-free roads are great
They improve my running gait
Running upright is the right thing
Crashing down does kinda sting.

Fresh describes a spring run
Now that winter’s finally done
Mother Nature creates a scene
That thrills and is always keen.

Growing daylight again is back
As we continue our road attack
We run in the right direction
As spring produces perfection.

May 2025

Thursday begins our May run
Featuring delicious spring sun
Finally, our days grow warm
And outside people swarm.

31 days of late spring delight
With longer evening light
The sun sets late in our day
Creating more outside play.

Mother’s and Memorial days
Bring many celebrating ways
Kicking off summer’s season
Getting out needs no reason.

Runners enjoy these May days
Running along the roadways
Colors dominate the road scene
Many sport that rich dark green.

We run now in lighter road gear
Having escaped winter’s leer
Warm temps are now the norm
So, our clothing must conform.

A May run is pure delight
Warmer temps are so right
We run on enjoying the road
Appreciating May’s new load.

On a May Run

May brings delightful weather
Along with rich green heather
The roadside view is so green
Creating a delightful road scene.

We’re enjoying a May run
Beneath the early dawn sun
Work traffic is flowing along
Accompanied by bird song.

This runner is dressed light
May’s weather never a fight
Running in daylight is nice
Get out early is my advice.

Often, we have a clear blue sky
So clear that we utter a sigh
We can see for miles and miles
The view’s good for many smiles.

We run on May’s dry roads
Enjoying late spring episodes
We run on without a care
As the winds ruffle our hair.

Our outside scene is so pretty
The couch-bound we do pity
They miss this stunning view
As we bid our spring adieu!

Green Trees

May gives us green trees
Shading our road sprees
During May the green grows
Covering the hills in tidy rows.

Now, running any May road
Reveals a leafy green episode
The rich foliage is very nice
My view free minus a price.

The leaves provide shade
During a hot-run parade
Running beneath is cool
The trees a May jewel.

Birds hide in the leaves
Singing about their peeves
The morning chorus is grand
It’s an early roadside band.

Running along a local road
Enjoying my foot mode
And eyeing those green trees
Deserves well done decrees.

The ridges are in full leaf
Enjoy this view is my belief
Summer beckons, we run on
Out again right before dawn.

Shoe Tariffs

Running shoes are not cheap
Will tariffs send prices steep?
My shoes are made overseas
The end result is a price squeeze.

My shoes were once made here
Although some folks may jeer
Few folks uttered a bad word
When companies left in a herd.

The move made someone money
I was told, “we’re sorry honey”
Your shoe is again out of stock
Maybe buy ‘em in a big block.

Tariff policy historically is wrong
Historians utter in unified song
Everyone loses, it’s really dumb
Higher prices make us numb.

If my shoe company builds here
Will I hear an appreciative cheer?
Probably not, at least 10 years
Before running shoes appear.

So, we need a good shoe plan
To counteract the tariff man
My daily run continues on
Living with tariffs, a marathon.
