Matherne and Mahalsky Win Lucky Charm

By Clay Shaw

Harrisburg, PA, March 18, 2023, Lucky Charm 4 Miler—Zoë Matherne of Philadelphia won the Lucky Charm 4 Miler in Harrisburg.  Matherne won the 2022 event and repeated as champion with a time of 24:09.  Teal Liu of Hershey was second in 25:03.  Lindsay Pridgen of Harrisburg was third in 25:44.  Emily Nelson of Mechanicsburg was fourth in 26:40.  Whitney Mayer of Hummelstown was ninth overall and top master in 28:45.

The Lucky Charm event was started in 2016 and was a combo 5K/10K event with a partnership with the Harrisburg St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  In 2022 it became a four miler, a win-win in my opinion.  Also, I’m not a big fan of combo races, where leaders of the longer race finish by running through the masses of the shorter event.   Lucky Charm starts and finishes on Second Street in Harrisburg, tours by the state capitol, runs along and crosses the Susquehanna River, loops City Island, and returns to Downtown Harrisburg.

Ryan Mahalsky of Bala Cynwyd, PA ran alone from the mostly green-clad 705 finishers, to win in 19:40. Philadelphia Track Club runners Mahalsky and Matherne were both overall victors.  Joshua Sadlock of Harrisburg was second in 20:15.  Nate Romberger of Lewisberry was third in 20:22.  Cem Aslan of Camp Hill was top master and fifth overall in 21:45.
