Mccabe, Matherne Win Competitive EBACC Summerfest 5K

by Clay Shaw

EAST BERLIN, PA, JULY 18, 2020—Central Pennsylvania runners have been waiting for months for some competition.  A long-time well-directed event, the EBACC SummerFest 5K offers cash awards to the top three.  The event also has a reasonable course that runs through most sections of East Berlin, PA, a nice small town in eastern Adams County, right next to the York County line.

Chris McCabe of Mechanicsburg won in 15:15.  Joshua Sadlock of Harrisburg had an early lead and took second in 15:22. C Fred Joslyn of Mt Holly Springs was third in 15:55.  All three men represent the Fleet Feet-Mechanicsburg store.  Reid Weber, 17, of Dillsburg PA was fourth in 16:16.  Luke Watson of Lititz was fifth in 16:30.  Luis Miranda of Lebanon was sixth in 16:40.  The top six men broke away from the rest of the field early.  Ryan Myers of York was the top Master in 18:47.  Myers was co-director of the York White Rose Run 2009-2016.

Zoe Matherne of Camp Hill won in 17:46 in a very competitive race with Georganne Watson of Lititz who finished in 17:51.  Matherne won the 2018 White Rose Run, and the 2019 Run for the Diamonds in Berwick on Thanksgiving.  Watson won the 2019 White Rose Run.  Nine-year-old Lyla Eltz of Hanover continues to run well, finishing third in 20:20, after a second female overall at the 2020 Shoe House 5 Miler.

Lindsay Pridgen of Mechanicsburg was fourth in 20:39.  Michelle Diffendarfer of Lancaster was fifth in 21:27.  Masters runner Megan Dodson of York was sixth overall in 21:34.

Sara Moyer and her team of volunteers staged a great event despite the COVID precautions.  Runners wore masks to pick up packets, there was no race day registration, no T-shirts, no kids run, no post-race food.  There was bottled water after the finish.  The runners, 136 of which finished, were just overwhelmingly appreciative to have a good race to run.  This was the 24th Running of the SummerFest 5K.
