Valley’s Fastest Man/Woman Series Taken by Suponcic; Martino for the Women

by Tom Walski

Past versions of the Wyoming Valley Fastest Man series tended to have a single runner dominate the series throughout. This year was different as each race was won by a different runner. However, with a first place and two second places, Kyle Suponcic from Pringle, cruised to the series title over John Martino of Dallas. The races were held on July 24, August 7, and August 22.

On the women’s side, there was little doubt as to the strongest runner, as Marina Martino won each race convincingly with only Suponcic and husband John ahead of her.

To compete for the series title, runners had to complete three one-mile races: a track mile at King’s College, a park mile in Kingston, PA, and a one-mile climb up Giant’s Despair Mountain, sponsored by the Breaker Brewing Company. Only a small number of runners were able to make it to all three events.

High school runner, Dominick Angradi edged out Suponcic in the first race, but Suponcic returned the favor in the second. For the third race, Wyoming Valley West High School’s Tavian McKenna made his only series appearance and lead Suponcic to the top by 17 seconds.

This was the first year that the Wyoming Valley Striders managed the race but the race was still directed by Misericordia College coach, Chris Wadas.
