New Haven, CT, September 2, 2024, Labor Day—Keira D’Amato, now living and training in Park City, UT, put her altitude training and coaching by Ed Eyestone to the test.  She won the USATF 20K championship in 1:06:25. D’Amato was the former USA record holder in both the marathon and half-marathon distances and was the 2022 winner of the New Haven Road Race.

Jess McClain of Phoenix was second in 1:06:50; she was fourth at the USA Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando this past February.  Savannah Berry of Orem, UT was third in 1:07:03.  Annie Frisbie of Edina, MN was fourth in 1:07:19.  Emma Grace Hurley of Indianapolis was fifth in 1:07:29.  As an FYI, eighth place finisher Carrie Elwood of Boulder was recently married, formerly known as Carrie Verdon.

Hillary Bor of Colorado Springs has his eyes on the USA half-marathon record in his upcoming (October 27) event in Valencia, Spain.  He used this race as a time trial, wanting to run around 58 minutes or faster.  Bor won the USATF 20K championship in 58:09, having distanced himself from the rest of the field shortly after the race had begun.

Nathan Martin of Jackson, MI was second; the 2:10 marathoner won an all-out sprint on the slightly downhill finish on Temple St. He was timed in 58:26.  In third place three seconds back, was Biya Simbassa of Flagstaff, AZ in 58:29.  Aidan Reed of Boulder, CO was fourth in 58:31.  Sam Chelanga of Colorado Springs was fifth in 58:37.  Reed Fischer of Westminster, CO was the final finisher under an hour, sixth overall in 59:59.

The USATF 20K was the headline event and had 633 finishers.  American runners love the half-marathon distance, and that was offered as well with 1142 finishers. The event encouraged community involvement with the 5K having 2462 finishers and a children’s run that drew hundreds.
