6.1.24 Lancaster, PA—Gabrielle Thiry of Lancaster ran the fastest winning time since 2019 with a 29:55. Thiry, who just graduated from Lancaster County Day and ran for McCaskey, was chased by teammate Ruby Garner-Valle, 14, who finished in 30:16. It was likely the first time that three teenagers finished in the top five in the 46-year history of the event. Elizabeth Doherty of Lancaster was third overall and top master in 31:09. Leah Navarro, 14, Seven Valleys, PA was fourth in 32:07. Leah was the 2023 York White Rose Run champion. Two-time Red Rose champ Leah Maher of New Providence, PA was fifth in 32:16.
Stephen Schousen of Lancaster, 21, was the men’s champ and he was delighted with his convincing victory in 25:12. Schousen missed his Bucknell cross country season with a torn plantar fascia. Ian Miller of Lancaster was second in 25:44. Schousen and Miller broke away from the 810-runner field early on the southward blocks on Duke Street. Ciaran Fisher of Marion Heights, PA and recently moving to Danbury, CT was third in 26:03. Samuel Gerstenbacher of Lancaster was fourth in 26:12. Two-time Red Rose champion Otis Ubriaco was fifth in 26:21. Scott Roth of Lancaster was top master in 29:10, he was 25th overall.
Outstanding age group performances were set as well. Jay McMillan and Denise McMillan of Columbia both won their 50-54 group. Jay ran 30:43 and Denise a 36:50. USA Olympic Marathon trials runner Doreen McCoubrie of West Chester, PA won her 60-64 group by over ten minutes in 35:12, and placed eleventh overall. Phil Garland of Lancaster won the 60-64 group in 31:56. Don Morrison of Coatesville won the 70-79 in 35:40. Margaret Moore of York was top in the 70-79 group in 46:05. Long-time standout Heide Moebius of Lancaster, now 85, won the 80 plus group in 1:02:50.
810 participants finished the 46th live running of the Red Rose 5 Mile Run. The course has changed very little since 1977. Editors note, it was my first race as an adult. I ran San Francisco’s famous Bay to Breakers twice while growing up there.

As he noted recently: “Freshmen/Sophomore year me (a 20:00 5k runner) would be mind blown if I told him I’m now a 15:00 5k runner.”
