By George A. Hancock
June 2024
Saturday begins June’s run
Officially with summer sun
30 days filled with warm fun
Including our daily long run.
The 16th brings Father’s Day
With picnics out our way
June brings graduation day
With graduates on their way.
June for this veteran road guy
Still running on daily and spry
Means lighter clothes to wear
Since Mother Nature’s on a tear.
Running daily in a Tee and shorts
Assists our long-distance sports
Love the warm temps on the road
While pursuing a summer episode.
Running early beats the hot heat
Which scorches our running feet
I’m lucky to have shady trees
Cooling my local running sprees.
June is also 2024’s halfway point
Finding many now out of joint
The year is almost half over
And folks just noted the clover.
Halfway
June is our halfway mark
In 2024’s ongoing lark
Many have trouble with time
Often discussed here in rhyme.
June brings a warm green scene
Eliminating the roadside mean
June’s daily sights are really vast
But brief, as June steadily slips past.
This runner gets up and outside
Early enjoying the seasonal ride
Father Time is in constant motion
One never needs a magical potion.
During June we examine our goals
Often daily on our road strolls
The aware are always on track
Moving forward with time’s whack.
Really, it only takes a daily plan
Not complicated like a crayon
We view the colors on the road
As we strengthen our run mode.
185 days left as our June ends
Our pace slows with some bends
But then, we increase our pace
Beaming a happy healthy face.
The Old Farm
There’s an old historic farm
Near me creating an alarm
I’ve run past over 50 years
At one time with cattle leers.
Last year, a new farm group
Decided it’s time to recoup
Monies missed from farming
Which isn’t that alarming.
For decades it was hay fields
Last year was huge corn yields
I ran by huge green corn stocks
A new sight with some shocks.
Corn grew as far as I could see
A valuable crop many agree
Right now, field trees are down
Amidst a cutting, chipping sound.
These farm fields are opened up
Pleasing this road-running pup
More growing land is really nice
Now it’s a rich farming paradise.
What crop gets planted this year
Has not reached my road ear
Perhaps, I’ll note at harvest time
Right here in a poetic rhyme!
The Summer Solstice
The Solstice is a happy-sad day
Yet, when it comes this way
Summer lovers will rejoice
In a cheerful pleased voice.
Others will make this note:
Daylight now grows remote
Each day means less light
For a summer-day delight.
June 20 is our Solstice day
And we may hear a bray
Summer ’24 is forecast hot
So seek that cooler spot.
Heat waves may slam us
Creating an energy fuss
Increased energy demands
Means seeking cool stands.
So, this running road guy
Runs early before dawn’s sky
It’s cooler for my daily run
I skip that hot burning sun.
Each season lasts just so long
Is my daily running song
I adapt and continue on
Running well before dawn.
