Poet’s Corner May 2024

By George A. Hancock

May 2024

Wednesday begins our May run
Now featuring superb spring sun
31 days filled with seasonal fun
So many miles till we’re done.

May is warmer out on the roads
Creating fabulous spring episodes
Sure, an occasional cold snap
Demands a cold-weather wrap.

But, these chilly events are few
So there’s no need to stew
Mother Nature’s on our side
So enjoy your May road ride.

Daylight returns to my early run
The growing dawn brings the sun
Running early in this dim daylight
Allows one to view a road sight.

May brings more folks outside
Enjoying our green colorful ride
The trees wear their foliage green
Creating an impressive road scene.

Running through May is so nice
So, here’s my seasonal advice
Get outside and enjoy the scene
As May turns our roadside green.

Green Trees

Now on my May distance sprees
I run near and under green trees
Green trees are a welcome sight
They provide me running delight.

Of course, they’re here for you
So skip that solemn boo-hoo
Green trees aid everyone’s run
Especially in that scorching sun.

The foliage provides cool shade
So nice on any long road parade
Those hot rays are deflected off
Shade works so hold that scoff.

Many green ridges line my routes
So I enjoy these greening sprouts
I run near a vast green spring sea
With green trees that I can see.

Also, some protection in the rain
Broad leaves thwart the wet pain
Green leaves are fresh and new
Highlighting that morning dew.

Green trees for five months stay
Then explode in colors every day
But today, we enjoy this rich green
Along our May roadside scene.

On A May Run

Today on my early May run
The clear sky forecasts sun
Dawn arrived in grand style
Creating an early morn smile.

The morning temps were warm
And outside the songbirds swarm
Warbling a delightful May tune
Thrilling the early road platoon.

Later on, a gentle spring breeze
Touches us with its light tease
The May wind ruffles our hair
But outside we really don’t care.

More daylight graces a May run
Promising great late spring fun
Outside there’s so much to do
Why stay in crying a boo-hoo?

The May runner is on the move
Perfecting that signature groove
May allows us to run on free
On every May distance spree.

Wasting time in May is sad
This runner is always glad
To run early at our May dawn
While many sleepy drivers yawn.

Treasure Piles

May brings large treasure piles
And for some moneyed smiles
Out here along our spring roads
Creating unique running episodes.

Out here in May locals collect trash
People want to avoid dumping rash
Where trash is dumped on the road
Sometimes by the large truck load.

So in early May I see big trash piles
Which, after collected, creates smiles
I run by pile after pile of old stuff
But, there’s more and it’s not rough.

Some trash seekers are out here too
Looking for salable items or even new
Trucks, cars, and tractors with carts
Because trash salvage is also lost arts.

This is an all-day motoring parade
Until those treasure piles slowly fade
They’re here when I run before dawn
All searching for any valuable icon.

Then, what’s left is taken swiftly away
And quiet returns to my road day
I run on in the growing daylight
Wondering, what’s my next sight?
