Poet’s Corner April 2024

By George A. Hancock

April

Monday begins April’s run
Now with some spring sun
Major League Baseball is in
Yet, there’s little joyful din.

Easter days are already over
As we eye the greening clover
The color green is April’s hit
Growing strongly we submit.

Our past winter here was mild
Pleasing this older road child
Running without a snow pack
Helps our daily running attack.

Our local April is 30 days long
Now featuring morning song
Warbled by the numerous birds
Singing outside in colorful herds.

Steadily our morning temps rise
Delighting those running wise
More daylight grows each day
Illuminating my local roadway.

April highlights the spring season
So getting outside needs no reason
Each new day moves runners on
As we appreciate the new dawn.

Green Runs

No, we’re discussing spring runs
Not ecology programs that stun
Although, running is a green act
That helps many see this fact.

April creates a rich green scene
Erasing memories of winter mean
Daily, my roadside is growing
Soon, we’ll be outside mowing.

I run by beautiful green buds
Blooming and no longer duds
This green is spreading wide
Across our April countryside.

I run by many greening trees
During my spring road sprees
Green foliage is a nice sight
Creating much run delight.

Road vegetation turns green
Producing an earthy rich scene
These spring odors are nice
Get outside is great advice.

Green runs are always first rate
Improving our daily road gait
Spring is a delicious season
Avoiding spring is treason.

Living Color

April’s temps with the sun
Create our living-color fun
Running along the local road
We view a blooming episode.

April’s colors are so yellow
Delighting this road fellow
Daffodils grow along my road
Despite the heavy traffic load.

Dandelions also grow so well
Along this road they’re swell
But a nuisance in my yard
Despite yardwork often hard.

Running all winter we see white
Or brown on our daily road flight
Now, our roadside is in bloom
Erasing that snowy cold doom.

Occasionally, we run by flowers
Watered by the April showers
Beautiful colors along the road
Pleasing our long-distance mode.

Living colors last a whole season
Meaning we never need a reason
Or a push to run more outside
Enjoying Mother Nature’s pride.

One Year Later

On April 21 of last year
Surgery without a cheer
Was scheduled to ease
Nerve compression, please.

Actually, more of a trend
If untreated has a bad end
Herniated discs on a nerve
Made this runner swerve.

Shooting and stiff pain
Really has no sound gain
So, off to Pittsburgh we go
Surgery may help this show.

Now, we’re one year later on
Still running at early dawn
But, the surgery didn’t cure
The whole issue, it’s poor.

There were five bad spots
Two repaired, one in knots
There is no real pain there
Just stiff beyond compare.

The discs changed my pace
But this was said to my face
Keep running even if slow
Running helps the nerves grow.
