Poet’s Corner March 2024

By George A. Hancock

March

Friday begins our March run
With Meteorological Spring sun
For me, March is a favorite time
Detailed here in poetic rhyme.

The 10th welcomes the new D.S.T.
When daylight costs a big dime
Actually our daylight is cost-free
And enjoyed on our road spree.

I enjoy running these March days
Along our early spring byways
Our outside world grows alive
And getting outside many strive.

March brings my 71st birthday
And the spring equinox, Hooray!
Sure, spring snow is a silly fad
But never lasts long so we’re glad.

MLB also begins at March’s end
Yes, warmer weather is the trend
Easter is the very last March day
Easter’s early but that’s really OK!

March brings a green road scene
With running weather not so mean
So, we run on viewing the road
Steadily producing a spring episode.

(Editor’s Note: Happy Birthday George! Enjoy your special day!)

More Road Shale

This winter again was mild
Pleasing this running child
Yet, several January weeks
Made us frozen snowy geeks.

Overall, snow totals fell below
Normal averages creating woe
For winter lovers on the slopes
Up against those brown ropes.

More sleet and ice these days
Means road shale on the byways
With salt providing good traction
But now a serious run detraction.

This year there’s more road shale
So, sometimes we run like a snail
Daily, shale sticks to our shoes
Creating terrible running blues.

Passing traffic flings shale away
Sometimes spoiling my road day
With shale bouncing off my head
Before returning to the road bed.

Road shale does get swept away
But not till a future distance day
For now I grimace and run on
Enjoying our new March dawn.

On A March Spring

I enjoy running March days
Out on the greening byways
This is an ode to March’s spring
Where every morning birds sing.

My early dawn is gone for a while
D.S.T. doesn’t create a warm smile
I run on knowing in a few weeks
Dawn daylight returns in steady peeks.

My running view steadily grows green
Creating a fresh, fragrant road scene
I love running by this color green
Spring’s color erases winter’s mean.

Icy winds have also slipped away
Gone until some future wintry day
I run now in a strong March breeze
Weather different so I run at ease.

Daylight during the afternoon hours
Is a March spring gift that empowers
Outdoor enthusiasts on the move
Seeking that perfect spring groove.

Our green vegetation grows strong
As does the dawn songbird song
Soon, colors will dot our roads
Lifting spirits with spring modes.

Time To End

D.S.T. begins in early March
Its story forms a spring arch
Daylight Saving Time is its name
Existing now in dubious fame.

One doesn’t save real time
Time is a constant steady rhyme
We shift daylight because we can
From the start, a political plan.

It’s time to end this time-shift plan
What we need is a time-shifting ban
Although only an hour this proves bad
D.S.T. is unsettling making many mad.

Running every day one can see this
Commuters off to work without bliss
I see motorists swerving on the road
The time-switch creates a tired episode.

It’s simple, pick a time-frame and stay
Ending that twice a year time shift bray
“Switching” time earns no real goal
It may even cost many lots of dole.

We need to pick a standard time
For year-round ending this crime
Year-round same time is the way
Then, we enjoy our yearlong play.
