September 4, 2023, Faxon Law New Haven Road Race, New Haven, CT—Clayton Young and Conner Mantz, training partners from Provo, Utah, came to the 46th Faxon Law New Haven Road Race, the USATF 20k Championships. The pair had an exciting sprint to the finish, in which they seemed to hit the finish banner at the same time. For a few minutes, it was unclear who actually won. Young won in 59:15 and Mantz was second in 59:16. Sam Chelanga of Colorado Springs was third in 59:26. Daniel Mesfun of Flagstaff, AZ was fourth in 59:32. Futsum Zienasellassie, also of Flagstaff, was fifth in 59:36. Seven men broke the hour mark in hot and humid weather.
Emily Sisson of Phoenix, AZ, the USA marathon record holder, easily won the 20K in 1:06:09. Sisson has been training for a good showing in Chicago. Emily was second to Keira D’Amato in the 2022 20k, when the two pushed each other to Keira’s course record of 1:04:29. D’Amato and Sisson have broken each other’s long-distance records during the past two years. Sisson broke D’Amato’s marathon record in Chicago 2022 with a 2:18:29. D’Amato returned the favor on Sisson’s half-marathon record by running 1:06:37 at the Gold Coast Half-Marathon in Australia in July. D’Amato did not come to New Haven this year, as she recovers from last week’s World Athletics Championships Marathon in Budapest.
Ednah Kurgat of Colorado Springs, the USA cross-country champion was second in 1:06:39. Emily Durgin of Flagstaff, AZ was third in 1:06:59. Tristin Van Ord of Blowing Rock, NC was fourth in 1:07:22. Annie Frisbie of Hopkins, MN was fifth in 1:07:27. Two-time USA Olympic marathoner Desiree Linden was eighth and top master in 1:08:46. Tokyo Olympians Molly Seidel (9th, 1:09:04), and Aliphine Tuliamuk (13th, 1:11:41) both of Flagstaff, AZ added to the star quality of the 20K field.
New Haven Green is the host of the Faxon Law New Haven Road Race. In addition to the USATF 20K championships, there are a mass participation 20K, half marathon, half-marathon relay, 5k, and a kid’s run.
