Snukis and Henderson Win 2023 Red Rose 5 Miler

by Clay Shaw

June 3, 2023, Lancaster, PA, Red Rose Run 5 Miler—Nathan Henderson returned home to Lancaster and celebrated graduation from Syracuse University with a convincing 24:38 win in the 45th running of the Red Rose Run.  I’m not counting 2020 & 2021 virtual.  Henderson, who was a star at McCaskey before heading to Syracuse and had run the Red Rose in the past, had his first win.

Samuel Gerstenbacher of Lancaster, who has two York White Rose victories plus the 2023 Race Against Racism win, was second in 25:15. Ryan Gehman of Millersville was third in 26:53. Gehman ran a 2:27:31 at the Boston Marathon in April.  Ty Stump of Camp Hill was fourth in 27:04.  Otis Ubriaco of Lancaster, a two-time Red Rose champ, was fifth in 27:08.  Cem Aslan of Camp Hill, 46, was top master and tenth overall in 27:56, as he out-sprinted two younger runners.

Samantha Snukis of Reading, PA had a convincing win in 30:02, finishing more than two and a half minutes ahead of the 2nd place finisher. Snukis is a pro triathlete and will compete in tris in Montreal and Maine this year.  The versatile athlete ran in the 2020 US Olympic Marathon Team Trials in Atlanta and has a marathon best of 2:44.

Meg Griffith of Manheim was second in 32:33. Thirteen-year-old Ruby Garner-Valle of Lancaster was third in 32:40.  Ruby won the Race Against Racism 5K in April. Alix Sheakley of Clay, PA was fourth and top master in 33:42.  Jessica Rodriguez of Lancaster was fifth in 33:52.

642 runners completed the 2023 running.  It was my first race as an adult in PA in the first year 1977.  The course has basically been the same since 1977.
