LANCASTER, PA, JUNE 1, 2019—Otis Ubriaco of Lancaster ran a thoughtful well-planned strategic race. Knowing his strengths and weaknesses on race day, Ubriaco figured he would need to distance himself from his competitors around the three-mile point. Ubriaco did just that prior to the big uphill in Mile Four, and came home with the victory in 26:31. Ubriaco told me that he did not want to chance a sprint on the final downhill blocks to the finish. Isaac Bryan, who recently won the Race Against Racism/Lancaster 5K took second in 26:38. Duncan Hopkins placed third in 26:53. Evan Sandt, 49, of Conestoga was top Master in 30:19.
Katie O’Regan of Lititz had tried to win the Red Rose three prior years. She was delighted to win the 2019 Red Rose, despite battling Achilles tendon issues in recent weeks. O’Regan’s time of 30:30 placed her seven seconds ahead of Georgeanne Watson (30:37). Bryanna Dissinger of Lebanon was third in 31:17. The Masters winner, Brenda Hodge of York, was sixth overall in 32:13.
Some strong times were set by some long-time road-race veterans. Dave Anderson of Spry (York County) at 66, ran 34:59. Mimi Newcomer of Lancaster at 61 ran 38:36. Dave Howey of Etters, age 71, ran 37:27. The remarkable Heidi Moebius of Lancaster at 80 ran 48:09. Long-time Lancaster running icon Bill Smith had run all the Red Roses, and now is the official starter.
The 43rd Annual Red Rose Run is hosted by the City of Lancaster. The event had a large increase in finishers with 1038 crossing the line in 2019, up from 865 in 2018.
