6.14.25 Provo, UT—John Bozung of Orem, Utah has directed the Snow Peaks 50 Miler for 29 years.  This year he announced that the 2025 SP50 will be his last as the race director.

We met John in the Canadian Arctic prior to the 1996 Nanisivik Midnight Sun Marathon that started in Arctic Bay, NU.  (It was the Northwest Territories then, but became Nunavut in 1999.)  We’ve been friends with John since 1996 and have done many marathons with him since.  John has amazing accomplishments, such as his streak of marathons every month, and several marathons run every year for many years. John’s marathon streak of a marathon (or ultra) each month, came to an end after 29 years, 10 months early in 2025.

For Squaw Peak / Snow Peaks, we’ve helped with registration and photography many times: Clay 17 times and Karen 10.  The scenery on the course is simply fantastic and picture worthy. Karen ran it in 2012, becoming the oldest female runner to finish at that time, and amazing for someone who has always lived at sea level.

With capable new directors, the race has a bright future looking forward to 2026 and beyond.

Zachary Garner of Provo, UT was the overall male winner for the second time, winning the 2025 Snow Peaks 50 Miler in 8:06:51.  Mike Cappi of Salt Lake City was second in 8:36:58. Brandon Chamberlain of Provo, UT was third in 8:59:18, as only these three men broke the nine-hour mark on a warmer-than-normal day.  George Grygar of Salt Lake City was top master and fourth overall in 9:07:32. Earning the second master award was Jonny Rejholec of Eagle Mountain, UT who ran 9:44:06 and was seventh overall.  Only nine men broke ten hours.

Sarah Krout of Victor, Montana led the women in 10:44:23. Andrea Christensen, 44, of Saratoga Springs, UT was second overall and top master in 11:03:41. Christensen has been in the top three finishers in 2023, 2024, and 2025.  Rachelle Beyler of Provo, UT was third in 11:36:02. She is 23-years-old.  Heidi Bennett of Cedar Hills, UT was fourth and second master in 11:45:15.

The top prizes are unique, hand made Navajo sculptures.

155 runners finished the 2025 event out of 210 registered. Runners came from Utah, Colorado, Montana, Tennessee, South Dakota, California, Arizona, North Carolina, Oregon, Washington, Illinois, Iowa, Alabama, and Mexico City (Wendy Holdaway, finishing her 23rd Snow Peaks 50).

The course is challenging, difficult, and scenic in the Wasatch Mountains above Provo, Utah.  There are 13,000 feet of elevation gain and loss with five major climbs, including the high point near Windy Pass of nearly 9300 ft.  The course drops nearly 4000 feet in the final nine miles to the finish at Vivian Park.

The Snow Peaks 50 Miler was named Squaw Peak 50 Miler until recently (2022), when the name of the former Squaw Peak was changed to Kyhv Peak.  (KIVE like Dive) is the Ute word for mountain.
