June 7, 2025, Lancaster, PA—Downtown Lancaster, PA is a fun place, and its oldest race takes place the first Saturday in June.  This year’s event was called 49th Annual, but in reality, it was run for the 47th time in 2025.  Some races consider the virtual runnings of 2020 and 2021 in their stats (ok, whatever).  In ancient history, the Red Rose started in 1977; it was my first east coast race ever. The York White Rose started later in 1977. (Save the date: The 2025 York White Rose 5 Miler is September 27th and registration is open now.)

Caroline Moyer of West Chester, PA led the women in 29:41. Laura Antinucci of Philadelphia was second in 30:16.  Allison Emmons of Hockessin, DE was third and top master in 30:19.  Katherine Hallock of Hummelstown was fourth in 30:25. Ruby Garner-Valle, 15, Lancaster was fifth in 30:43.  Katie O’Regan of Lititz, the 2019 champion was seventh in 31:34. Hometowns were not listed on the results, so I did the best I could.

Worku Bereda of Lancaster from Ethiopia, ran down Queen Street all alone, becoming the first East African winner of the Red Rose, winning in 25:16.  Looking back in history, Sydney Maree of South Africa won in 1978, and two athletes from Morocco were champions years ago.

Dan Forry of Columbia, winner of the 2024 York White Rose Run was second in 26:14, running for the Philadelphia Runner Track Club.  Matthew McNair of Lancaster was third in 26:16, as he and Bereda run for the Myers Running Project.  Ciaran Fisher of Marion Heights, PA and Danbury, CT and running for the newly kitted Red Rose Track Club was fourth in 26:36. Nathaniel Alter of Lancaster was fifth in 27:01.  Two-time Red Rose champ Otis Ubriaco of Lancaster was sixth in 27:08.  The first master was Alex Pearson of Hummelstown in 28:12; he was fifteenth overall.

With well over 1,000 entrants, the Red Rose finished with 977 who crossed the finish line.
