Hayes and Hurst Win 2025 Carlisle Downtown Mile

5.15.25 Carlisle, PA—I was rather reluctant to agree to photograph this event, but pleasantly surprised. The Carlisle Downtown Mile is a straight west to east trek on West High Street in Carlisle.  From its start at a carwash on the far edge of town, the mile passes Dickinson College and finishes in Carlisle’s cool downtown, passing the theatre, which provided a cool background for many of my photos.  In my young glory days as a runner, I had some great races in Carlisle at the Shaffer Brothers Half Marathon and the Jim Thorpe Marathon.  Sadly, these races went away well before 2000.  It was nice to come back and see Carlisle.

The Downtown Mile had a fun Mascot sprint followed by a fun run that was all those who were perhaps not cutthroat about a finishing time, so it was just that…fun.  The following heats were 19 & under, 20-39, 40 and up, and a team challenge to wrap it up.

Joanna Hayes of Dillsburg was tops among women in 5:30.66.  At the 39, she was in the 20-39 race.  Katryn Yocum of Carlisle was second in 5:37.48. Lara Rogers of Newville was third in 5:42.74.  Rachel Aslan of Camp Hill led the masters in 6:14.27.

Logan Hurst of Carlisle had a strong final push to win the Carlisle Downtown Mile in 4:22.93.  Brian Fuller of Mechanicsburg who had done most of the leading with his Penn State Alumni clad brothers was second in 4:25.15.  Kevin Fuller of Camp Hill was third in 4:33.89 in the 40+ heat, and Paul Hayes of Dillsburg won in 4:39.48.  When I initially rounded out the result to the full second, he told me 4:39.48 looked better than 4:40, LOL.  I had to agree, but will continue to round up on the longer road race times.  Hayes won his heat by 29 seconds, so photography was lots of Paul Hayes photos and wait for the other competitors.

Occasionally I get called out by ignoring seniors.  In big city road races, it’s just not possible.  Kudos here to Margaret Moore, 73, of York who won her group in 8:18.38 and to Don Morrison, 75, of Coatesville who ran 6:44.77.

It was good to see Rosie Rogers and her Appalachian Running Company team take the team title and all went home happy with growlers.
