3.16.25 New York, NY—Course/event records were set on a perfect day for running in the fog. The 2025 used the Brooklyn Bridge for the first time, and the course proved to be fast.
Sharon Lokedi of Kenya broke away from her competitors near mile 10 and went on to win in 1:07:04. It was great to see Fiona O’Keeffe of Durham, NC finish second in 1:07:46, after an injury plagued 2024 after her brilliant marathon debut at the USA Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando. Calli Hauger-Thackery of Great Britain was third in 1:07:49. Diane Van Es of Netherlands was fourth in 1:08:03. Amy-Eloise Neale of Great Britain was fifth in 1:08:12. Emma Bates of Boulder was sixth and second American in 1:08:21. 2024 champ Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal of Norway was seventh in 1:09:03. Grøvdal ran 1:09:09 to win in 2024.
Sara Hall of Flagstaff, AZ was tenth in 1:09:37. Hall was top master, and ran the USATF Atlanta Half in 1:09:45, remarkable consistency as she and many others prepare for the Boston Marathon.
Abel Kipchumba of Kenya repeated as champion, winning in 59:09. He broke the men’s record that stood for 18 years It took Kipchumba until nearly the end to shake free from Conner Mantz of Provo, UT who was six seconds back in 59:05. Hillary Bor of Colorado Springs, CO was third in 59:55; he was third in Atlanta as well.
Patrick Dever of Great Britain was fourth in 1:00:19, as the Brits thrived at this year’s 2025 NYC Half marathon on the chilly, foggy morning. Wesley Kiptoo, was listed as American as he has lived in Flagstaff for quite some time. I do believe he is still a Kenyan citizen. Kiptoo was fifth in 1:00:56. Alex Masai of Kenya was sixth in 1:01:17. Ben Flanagan of Canada was seventh in 1:01:37.
Manuela Schär of Switzerland led the wheelchair pro women in 54:09. 2024 champion Geert Schipper of Netherlands won again in 49:53.
Over 28,500 runners finished the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon, including Kelly Rose from York, PA who set a new PB of 1:27:43. Our friend Mary Newell of New Haven, CT ran 2:40:04; she’s 74 and was on our 2013 epic Ethiopia trip. We had lunch with Mary, and later went to see Book of Mormon on Broadway (the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on W 49th Street).
