York, PA; September 28, 2024—Zoë Matherne of Philadelphia returned to the York White Rose Run to win her fifth WRR title. Matherne was out front all the way and won in 28:58.  Only eight men finished in front of her.

Dan Forry of Columbia, PA won the men’s division in 25:28. In a much closer race Forry, who ran at York College, was wearing a black and green York College vest.  Michael McCann of Moscow, PA was two seconds back in 25:30.  Ciaran Fisher of Marion Heights, PA was third in 25:47.  Fisher recently won the popular Ben & Tim’s 5K in Hershey.  David Rumsey of Harrisburg was fourth in 26:10.  Paul Hayes of Dillsburg was fifth and top master in 27:08.

Joanna Hayes of Dillsburg was second in 31:41. Nicole Register of Jacobus was third in 32:03 as she nailed a personal best on the somewhat hilly White Rose Run course.  Rebecca Doner of Mount Wolf, PA was fourth in 33:20.  Sarah Wenger of Dallastown was fifth and top master in 33:34.

In our Runner’s Gazette reporting of some of the larger events, it’s often impractical or impossible to cover some of the age group accomplishments.  At the York White Rose Run, there is often an excellent group of older runners in the field and this year’s event was amazing.  Of note were: Stephen Hranilovich, 61, of Phoenixville running 34:37 and Don Morrison, 74, of Coatesville running 36:26. Dianna Golden, 71, of Frankford, DE ran 39:38 and Bonnie Stoeckl, 68, of Pequea, PA ran 40:35.  Les Bell, 77, of York ran 43:35;  Margaret Moore, 72, of York ran 45:07; and Norm Drasher, 82, of Aspers, PA ran 1:03:14. Kudos to all of them and many more older runners in the 47th running of York’s oldest race.

252 finished the 2024 White Rose Run; 305 were entered.  It’s an upswing from 2023 which was adversely affected by Tropical Storm Ophelia.  It was rainy this year, too, with indoor race-day registration and packet pickup. But it was much warmer than last year and mostly just an overcast mist.

The race means quite a bit to me as you might know.  I was not the race founder; I ran the first three years 1977 to 1979 with a personal best in 1979. I was the race director from 1980 through 2008.  Patrick Hickey and Ryan Myers directed the race from 2009 to 2016.  In 2017 everything went wrong at the same time, and there was no race.  From 2018 through 2021 Karen Mitchell directed the race and the York Road Runners took over ownership of the event.  Karen Lam-Duckett and Erin Dubs became the race directors in 2022, and they’re doing an excellent job with new challenges and features.  Please support this event in the future, as many races no longer run through city streets.
