Kelliher and Trauger Win Gold Star 5K

By Clay Shaw

5.27.24 York, Pa—This race starts from the Gold Star Memorial Garden.  If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth a drive to 1000 Vander Ave. for a look.  It’s a beautiful garden and tribute to those who have given their lives for the country.

The Memorial Day race takes place early at 7:30 prior to the Gold Star ceremonies.  The race has been taking place for 14 years, and this year had a new course on the Edgar Street bike lane, and a new path that weaves back to Memorial Park.  A massive tree fell in the woods behind Penn State York, which made the new course happen.  The new course received rave reviews and may become permanent.

A 9-mile Tour of the Memorials also takes place, complete with detailed directions and a water stop at the York Water Company building on Market Street.  A horrible weather forecast for days leading up to Memorial Day might have led to a lower-than-normal turnout of just 96 finishers in the 5K.  The storms hit north and east, and Memorial Day was beautiful in York.  The York Revolution baseball team also played on this fine day. (Editor’s note: One of the race directors contacted us and indicated that there were 136 5K finishers, a higher than normal number for this event. We apologize for our mistake.)

Quinn Kelliher of York, a 15-year-old Dallastown runner, was top woman in 22:03.  Quinn was second in 2023.  Lauren Hand of York was second in 25:01.  York Road Runners Club president Heather Roe was third overall and top master in 25:27.

Donovan Trauger of York won by 40 seconds with an 18:54.  Mitchell Litke of York was second overall in 19:36.  David Mabe of Raleigh, NC was third overall in 21:03.  Kudos to the 82-year-olds. Marlyn Hahn ran 40:52 and Milton Bushey ran 44:18.  Both are from York.  While Hahn winters in Florida, Bushey runs the York Winter Series.

For the sixth time, Aaron Lux of New Cumberland ran with a large log to honor veterans.
