Philadelphia, PA, May 5, 2024—Amber Zimmerman of Philadelphia won handily wearing her white New Mexico hat, her winning time 52:52. Amber told me before the race that most people don’t recognize the NM (Zia Sun) logo. She expressed fondness for the state and the mountains, having lived in NM for eight years.
Regan Rome of Providence, RI was second in 54:53. Rome is a Northeast Pennsylvania native and has been a winner at the famed Thanksgiving classic, the Run for the Diamonds in Berwick, PA. Regan’s mom ran as well. Amy Rome was 3rd in the 55-59 division in 1:11:25. Elizabeth Chikootas of Harrisonburg, VA was third in 55:13. Anna Kenig-Zeisler of Washington, DC was fourth in 55:18. Ellen Feringa of Philadelphia was fifth in 55:24.
Kevin McDonnell of Cherry Hill, NJ ran comfortably in the back of the lead pack for three miles. When Zack Holden of Washington, DC surged after passing Temple University, McDonnell covered the move and ran with Holden for two miles. At the sweeping circle around City Hall, McDonnell made his decisive move, and just like that the race was his. McDonnell is used to winning in South Philly, having won the Philly 10K in August in 30:41. McDonnell was the first American winner since Eric Lorenz won in 1994.
DC runners dominated the top ten with a large contingent in both the men’s and women’s top fields. Zack Holden of DC held strong for second in 47:45. Owen Ritz, also from DC, was third in 48:07. Clint McKelvey of Vienna, VA was fourth in 48:11 (yes that’s in the DC metro area). Ryan Mahalsky of Philadelphia was fifth in 48:16.
Winter Parts of State College, PA was the top-binary athlete in 52:39. Only two wheelchair athletes participated. Miguel Jiminez Vergara of Chula Vista, CA blitzed the downhill course, despite the rain, in 34:14. Tony Nogueira of Glen Ridge, NJ who is 56 did a 44:10.
Jennifer Pesce of Shamong, NJ ran 59:02, good for 22nd overall and top master. Brian Flynn of Ashland, VA was 23rd and top master in 51:22.
Looks like prize money eligibility was open to athletes with USATF membership, which might explain the surprising absence of all the non-USA elite athletes. The 44th running had rainy, misty conditions, but the 31,305 finishers enjoyed their day down one of the most famous streets in the world. The straight shot finish into the Philadelphia Navy Yard was a welcome return.
