Matherne and Ubriaco Win Race Against Racism 5K

by Clay Shaw

Lancaster PA, April 27, 2024—Zoë Matherne of Philadelphia, the 2022 champion, returned to Lancaster with another victory, winning in 17:50.  Samantha Snukis of Pottstown, a pro-triathlete and 2023 Red Rose winner, was second in 18:02.  Snukis afterwords continued on a 20-mile training run.  Katie O’Regan of Lititz, the 2017 champion, was third in 18:15.  Joanna Hayes of Dillsburg was fourth in 18:44.  Hayes was the 2021 Baltimore Marathon champion.  Courtney Johnson of Quarryville was fifth in 18:54.  The masters champ was Elizabeth Doherty of Lancaster in 19:52; she placed ninth overall in a strong women’s field.

Otis Ubriaco of Lancaster, who has two Red Rose Run championships, adds Race Against Racism to his resume.  Otis won in 15:40.  David Rumsey of Harrisburg was just three-seconds back in second place in 15:43.  The long, straight home-stretch on Chestnut Street, with a slight uphill to the Musser Park finish, makes a strong visual.  Fortunately for my photography, the cloud cover was fantastic.  Although the morning was a bit chilly, it was near perfect for the athletes.

Ciaran Fisher from Marion Heights (it’s near Mt Carmel, PA) was third in 15:57; he’s a member of the F & M Track Club, as are most of the athletes in the top ten.  The F & M Track Club is open to the public and not affiliated with the college of the same name.  Samuel Gerstenbacher of Lancaster, the 2023 RAR champ coming back from injury, was fourth in 16:21.  Adam Moore of Wrightsville was fifth in 16:26.  The first master was 58-year-old Ian Schouten of Lititz in 18:18.

The YWCA Race Against Racism started in 1999 and is the oldest in the USA.  It is also the largest race in Lancaster City.  The physical race has been held 24 years, as the race was virtual in both 2020 and 2021. In some aspects it’s the 26th Anniversary.
