Washington, DC, April 7, 2024, 51st Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Miler—Perfect running weather allowed records to be broken. Although the Cherry Blossoms were well past their peak, some of the world’s best athletes were in peak form. The 51st CUCB also featured a new mascot “Stumpy,” named for a whimsical cherry blossom tree that will (sadly) need to be moved from the Tidal Basin.
Sarah Chelangat of Uganda repeated her CUCB win with nearly a solo run over the last seven miles, winning in a course record time of 51:14. We saw Chelangat place sixth the prior weekend in Belgrade World Cross Country.
Emily Durgin of Flagstaff, AZ won her first USATF title, breaking the tape in 51:26, just twelve seconds in back of overall race winner Chelangat. Kasanesh Ayenew of Ethiopia was third in 51:38. Americans took the next two places to round out the USA podium. Rachel Smith of Flagstaff, AZ, who recently won the Gate River 15K was fourth and second American in 51:40. Annie Frisbie of Edina, MN was fifth overall and third American in 52:01.
Wesley Kiptoo of Kenya, who trains in Flagstaff, AZ, ran steady with the lead pack as it dwindled to just a few, then unleashed a confident kick to win CUCB in 45:54. Raymond Magut of Kenya was just one second back in 45:55.
Hillary Bor of Colorado Springs, CO, who a set an American record at the 2023 CUCB 10 miler, broke that record by 16 seconds, breaking the USATF tape in 45:56. Nathan Martin of Jackson, MI also broke the 2023 record as he finished fourth overall and second American in 46:00. Biya Simbassa of Flagstaff, AZ was fifth overall and third American in 46:17.
