Grøvdal and Kipchumba Win with Late Surges

3.17.24 New York, NY, 2024 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon—Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal of Norway had a couple of podium places in the past at the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon.  Today Grøvdal got the win in 1:09:09.  The Euro-XC star surged away from her final competitor, Glady Chepkurui of Kenya in the final mile.  Chepkurui took second in 1:09:27. Edna Kiplagat of Kenya, and a resident of Longmont, Colorado, was third overall and top master in 1:09:46.  Cynthia Limo of Kenya was fourth in 1:11:54.  Diane van Es of Netherlands was fifth in 1:12:03.  The first American was track star Jenny Simpson of Boulder, CO who was sixth in 1:12:06.

Abel Kipchumba of Kenya was the men’s champ in 1:00:25. Zouhair Talbi of Morocco was second in 1:00:41.  Yemane Haileselassie of Eritrea was third in 1:01:37.  Just off the podium was the first American, Hillary Bor of Colorado Springs CO who was fourth in 1:01:47.  Reed Fischer of Boulder, CO was fifth in 1:03:06.  The top master was World XC star Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia who was seventh in 1:03:59.

Susannah Scaroni of Champaign, IL won the women’s professional wheelchair race in 53:50.  Tatyana McFadden of Clarksville, MD was second in 58:42.  Great Britain athlete Eden Rainbow-Cooper was third in 59:09.

Geert Schipper of Netherlands won the men’s professional wheelchair race in 48:43. Evan Correll of Champaign, IL was second in 52:06.  Johnboy Smith of Great Britain was third in 52:51.

Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia was seventh and top master in 1:03:59. Bekele won Olympic gold in both 5000 and 10,000 meter events at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He also won 11 World Cross Country championships.
Reed Fischer of Boulder, CO was fifth overall and second American in 1:03:06. Fischer was ninth in the USA Olympic Trials in Orlando.
Calli Thackery of Great Britain checks her time as she was seventh in 1:22:09 and recently named to the GBR Olympic Marathon team.
Tristan Woodfine of Canada was sixth in 1:03:50.
Jacqueline Gaughan of Boston, MA was tenth in 1:12:47.
Matthew Baxter of New Zealand was eighth in 1:04:12.
Clayton Young of Provo, UT, 2024 USA Olympic Marathoner, was 13th in NYC in 1:05:35, smiling all the way.

Alexandra Conway of New York, NY was 17th in 1:17:41.
David Nilsson of Sweden was twelfth in 1:05:27.
Taishi Ito of Japan was eleventh in 1:04:54.
Tomonori Yamaguchi of Japan, age 20, was tenth in 1:04:36.
