44th Maryland – District of Columbia RRCA 10 Mile Club Challenge

Story and Photos by George Banker

The 44th RRCA 10 Mile Club Challenge was hosted by the Howard County Striders on Sunday, February 25, 2024, at Howard County Community College, Maryland.

The winds were calm with a temperature range of 25 degrees at the start of the race and up to 35 degrees at the finish. The course is known for its hills. The start elevation was 443 feet above sea level with 446 feet at the finish. The total ascent is 558 feet. The course is advertised as having “rolling hills with multiple elevation changes.”

The Howard County Striders and the volunteers provided another excellent, well- executed event, which attracted 16 RRCA member clubs with 759 qualified runners (663 started and 656 finished).

The scoring was cross-country style.  It was a sight to see one club against another and it took a total team effort. The last finisher trained as hard as the winner. The bottom line was the representation of teams. The atmosphere was each runner supporting their teammates.

There is no reason for any person to not belong to a RRCA Club and it is a good way to share the pain and the joy of training and racing.

There is a special thanks to Howard County Community College, local police and medical jurisdictions.
