11.5.23, New York, NY—Hellen Obiri of Kenya who recently moved to Boulder, CO, won the New York City Marathon in 2:27:23. Obiri became the first woman since 1989 to win both Boston and New York Marathons in the same year. The small 14-woman elite field had big names and big resumes, and the 11-woman lead group stayed basically together into Manhattan.  It was slow and cautious, and nobody seemed to care about a fast pace.  By mile 25 it was down to four.  Hellen Obiri didn’t break away from the last remaining competitor Letesenbet Gidey until 400 meters to go on the home stretch.  Gidey finished six seconds back in 2:27:29. 2022 champion Sharon Lokedi of Kenya was third in 2:27:33.  Former marathon world record holder Brigid Kosgei of Kenya was fourth in 2:27:45.  Mary Ngugi-Cooper of Kenya was fifth in 2:27:53. Edna Kiplagat of Kenya and also a Boulder resident was top master and seventh overall in 2:29:40. Kellyn Taylor of Flagstaff, AZ was the top American, finishing eighth in 2:29:48.  Molly Huddle of Providence, RI was ninth in 2:32:02.

Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia set a new TCS New York City Marathon record of 2:04:58, as he took care of business and ran away with the victory.  It was the first sub 2:05 marathon ever in NYC. Albert Korir of Kenya was second in 2:06:57, a personal best.  Shura Kitata of Ethiopia was third in 2:07:11.  Abdi Nageeye of Netherlands, the Tokyo Olympic silver medalist, was fourth in 2:10:21. Koen Naert of Belgium was fifth in 2:10:25.  The first American was Futsum Zienasellassie of Flagstaff, AZ who placed tenth in 2:12:09. Elkanah Kibet of Colorado Springs, Co was second American, eleventh overall, and top master in 2:12:23.

Catherine Debrunner of Switzerland set a new TCS New York City Marathon wheelchair race record of 1:39:32. Manuela Schär, also of Switzerland, was second in 1:47:54.  Susannah Scaroni of the USA, the 2022 champion, was third in 1:48:14.

Marcel Hug of Switzerland completed a six-race sweep of all the Abbott Marathon Majors with his 1:25:29 victory at the TCS New York City Marathon.  The cool people want to do all of the marathon majors, and Marcel Hug won them all in 2023. That’s pretty cool, plus add a Dubai Marathon win as well. Daniel Romanchuk of the USA was second in 1:30:07.  Jetze Plat of Netherlands was third in 1:34:22.
