10.8.23 Chicago, IL—The 45th Bank of America Chicago Marathon was one for the ages, as several new records were set.  Kelvin Kiptum, 23, of Kenya, stole the show with a new world record of 2:00:35.  Eluid Kipchoge’s Berlin 2022 record of 2:01:09, was topped by Kiptum by 34 seconds. Kiptum ran the first half in 1:00:48, and ran a faster second half, joined by Daniel Mateiko making his marathon debut.  Mateiko, who had several sub-hour half marathons but no marathon finishes, would drop out after 35K. Benson Kipruto, the 2022 champion, bettered his time by 22 seconds to finish second in 2:04:02.  Bashir Abdi of Belgium, who has Olympic and World Champs Marathon bronze medals, would also be third in Chicago, in 2:04:32.  John Korir of Kenya was fourth in 2:05:09. Seifu Tura of Ethiopia, the 2021 Chicago champ, was fifth in 2:05:29.

Americans Conner Mantz and Clayton Young, training partners from Provo, Utah, set personal bests and Paris qualifiers.  Mantz was sixth in 2:07:47 and Young was eighth in 2:08:00.  Galen Rupp of Portland, OR was eighth in 2:08:48. Sam Chelanga of Colorado Springs was ninth in 2:08:50.

Sifan Hassan of Netherlands ran the second fastest women’s marathon ever with a 2:13:44. Admittedly a “slow” starter, Hassan trailed 2-time defending champion Ruth Chepngetich by six seconds at halfway. Chepngetich ran the first half in 1:05:42. Hassan would break away soon after and win by nearly two minutes.  Only Tigst Assefa, who ran 2:11:53 in Berlin last month has a faster marathon time.  Megertu Alemu of Ethiopia was third in 2:17:09.  Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya was fourth in 2:17:23.

The Americans were led by American record holder Emily Sisson of Flagstaff, AZ who was eighth in 2:22:09.  Tokyo bronze medalist Molly Seidel of Flagstaff was ninth in 2:23:07.  Sara Vaughn of Boulder, CO was tenth with a personal best of 2:23:24.  Des Linden of Charlevoix, MI was 17th in 2:27:35 and broke the American masters record of 2:27:47 set by Deena Kastor in 2015.

More Chicago Marathon records were set by wheelchair athletes from Switzerland.  Marcel Hug, led from the start to win in 1:22:37.  Catherine Debrunner had to battle American Susannah Scaroni all the way, and won in 1:38:44.
