by Clay Shaw and Karen Mitchell

10.1.23 Riga, Latvia, Men’s World Athletics Road Championships—Yomif Kejelcha led nearly the entire race and broke everyone but one.  Yomif Gebrhiwet, a smaller, fellow Ethiopian tucked in for much of the race as Kejelcha fought the wind. As it turned out Gebrhiwet outkicked Kejelcha winning in 12:59 to Keljelcha’s 13:02. The two Ethiopians dominated the field.

Third place was fourteen seconds back. Nicholas Kipkorir of Kenya earned the bronze as the best of the rest in 13:16. Dawit Seare of Eritrea was fourth in a personal best of 13:21.  Cornelius Kemboi of Kenya was fifth in 13:24.

Olin Hacker of Madison, WI led the USA duo in 13:36, good for 14th.  Amhed Muhumed of Flagstaff, AZ was 22nd in 13:42.  29 out of the 41 athletes ran times under 14 minutes.

“Flash interviews” from after the race:

Winner – Hagos GEBRHIWET, ETH

“Coming to this race, I was thinking about Budapest.  I could not perform well at the World Championships in Hungary, so I am very proud of what I achieved right now.  It is a historical moment for me and also for my country to become the first road running world champion  .  .  .  The biggest difference between Budapest and Riga is also the weather – in Riga, the conditions are very similar to ours in Ethiopia, so that is why I am so happy and in Budapest it was just too hot and I did not feel well.”

Third – Nicholas KIPKORIR, KEN

Thank you to the people of Riga for having me and thank you to the fans for their great support  .  .  .  It was an exciting race; I was made to work hard, but I am very pleased with my performance today.  This medal means a lot to me.
