7.23.23 San Francisco, CA—While San Francisco is still struggling post-covid with retail and in-person office jobs, the San Francisco Marathon and other races had a new record of 29,431 participants.

The marathon started at 5:15 AM on the Embarcadero at Mission Street, and went north through Fisherman’s Wharf, Fort Mason, The Marina, and The Presidio well before the tourist crowds awakened.  The marathon crossed the Golden Gate Bridge in both directions and did three miles in Marin County.  The Marin miles had a quick Sausalito view and some hills to conquer upon return to the GG Bridge. The half-marathon split was on the GG Bridge. The course then wound through the western part of The Presidio and entered swanky Sea Cliff and the Richmond District, Little Russia, Golden Gate Park, and a loop around Stow Lake.  Mile 20 was in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood.  The race finished going east on 16th Street into the Dogpatch area and past the Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors, and McCovey Cove/ Oracle Park, home of the San Francisco Giants (and my photo spot/office). The home sprint was north on Embarcadero with a finish nearly under the Bay Bridge.  OK, it’s my hometown, so you got the course description in detail.
