LEWISBURG, PA--Several traditions were intact for the fourth annual 5K Race for Women's Health, April 26: an exciting race, high spirits, a good cause, great music, and prizes…and rain!

Despite the weather, Colin Hurley, 19, of Eldred, won the men's field with a time of 17:42, and Renee Papajis, 28, of Bloomsburg, was the first woman finisher with a time of 20:12.

The popular children's run was dedicated to Carrie Smith-Belleson, a women's health activist and long-standing Race Committee member who lost her battle with breast cancer in early June. "Carrie's KidRun" attracted two groups: 3-to-5 and 6-to-8-year-olds, and was wildly applauded by parents and fans.

"Carrie was a gifted singer and an ardent speaker on women's health issues," said Race Director Sue Mathias. "Her voice, spirit, and passion will be deeply missed."

Mathias added, "Carrie organized the kids' run every year and took such pleasure in it. We were honored to be able to name it for her."

Race-day events included a two-mile walk, health care information, music, and massage. The Race was scheduled to coincide with Lewisburg's annual Arts Festival Sidewalk Show and Sale so there was a lively street scene in downtown Lewisburg for postrace activities.

The Race benefits Family Planning Plus, which provides health-care services to women and families in five central PA counties. The top winners received the Betsey Reicherter Memorial Award, original art works named for a former chair of the Family Planning Board of Directors.
