'Dancin' in the Streets'
at the Women's Health 5K

BY GARY FANELLI

LEWISBURG, PA--It was a rainy morning in late May, but you would never have known it as many powerful things were happening around the 2nd Annual Race for Women's Health 5K, held May 26.

Lively rock music was playing from the pavilion in the small park where the race was to start and finish. People were dancing, stretching, and jogging around to the rhythm and beat.

It was morning, and we in Lewisburg were in mourning over the death of Art Gulden, track and cross-country coach of over 30 years at Bucknell University.

The mood was decidedly upbeat and joyous as so many Bucknell alumni were in town to pay their final respects to a man who was without a doubt one of the very best coaches in the U.S. The Bucknell runners, and many others at the race, were dedicating the race to Art Gulden, so there was intensity in the air as well.

The "Young Bucks" (Bucknell Runners as they shall be forever known) took out the pace, hitting the first mile in 4:44. They were serious. Art would have been proud of them.

The finish line saw a new course record by about a minute and a half, set by Bradley Wertz (15:24). The women's record was also smashed as Laurel Park, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, took top honors with 17:39, almost two minutes under the old mark. Park is married to second place finisher, and Bucknell alum, Rich Stark (15:32).

The race was foremost about awareness of women's health issues, and breast cancer in particular. The runners were given a lot of timely information to keep them "abreast" of the latest developments and information. The race was a big success in that it raised a ton of money--over $6,000 (that would be a ton if it was in pennies, wouldn't it?).

All in all the race was a really joyous occasion and a big success. It will be even bigger and better next year. I was happy to be a part of the Women's Health 5K as it was a small, hometown race with a very special feeling; a feeling which is lacking in big races. It was so up close and personal and it seemed as if everybody knew one another; a very special celebration for very good reasons.

A Postrace Letter to Joe Henderson

May 30, 2001

Dear Joe,

Alan Webb is amazing. Not only is he a runner extraordinaire, he's a nice guy, too. He will do more to get kids into our sport than all of the trendy shoe ads combined. You were fortunate to be at the meet and see running history unfold firsthand at the Pre Classic.

But that's not what I am writing about. I'm writing about a local race, held in Lewisburg the day before, May 26. I'm on the race committee and have enjoyed helping and providing support and advice. Most of the committee members don't run at all. It's the Race for Women's Health 5K, held to raise money for breast cancer awareness and women's health issues. This year, coincidentally, the race took place on the same day as the memorial service for longtime Bucknell track and cross-country coach Art Gulden. I invited Gary Fanelli to run. Our Race Director, Sue Mathias, a runner, was thrilled when I said I'd ask him. I did and Gary accepted. I knew the course record from 2000, the first year, would fall (17 flat) with Gary running and rural Lewisburg would have a celeb runner running its streets.

Gary came to Lewisburg to run the race, dedicating his race to Art Gulden's memory. We told a bunch of Bucknell alum runners about the race on Friday night. They jumped at the chance to run a race "for Art" rather than go out for a casual run before the memorial service.

The top 10 men broke the course record, most of whom were former Bucknell runners. Gary was one of the record breakers. He not only broke the course record, he broke the Masters and Senior records, too (16:51). Our women's winner was Laurel Park from Ann Arbor, Michigan. Laurel is an excellent runner who came to Lewisburg with her husband, Rich Stark, who is a Bucknell alum runner. Laurel's time was 17:39, way under the women's record. The winning time was 15:24.

Gary was invited to speak at the awards ceremony. The runners were captivated. A local runner thanked me for putting "little Lewisburg" on the running map.

Although Eugene captured the spotlight on Sunday, Saturday was Lewisburg's day to shine. Art Gulden would have been proud.

That's the news from the middle of PA. Local runners won't soon forget the 2001 edition of the Race for Women's Health.
