Orrson breaks 26-year-old Women's Record
BY TOM WALSKI
LEHMAN, PA--Once again the Winters 4.5 Mile End race, held March 22, lived up to its name (notice its winters end not start of spring). Runners were faced with a windy, 30-degree day and a course with roughly two miles of muddy road. But thats what makes this race a classic.
Jeff Skwierz was the best mudder this day carving out a 37-second victory over Mickey Moorhead. This was Moorhead's second consecutive second place finish. The best quality performance of the day was Marina Orrsons overall third place finish, crushing the womens field by over five minutes. Marina Orrson broke (25:58) the 1989 course record (26:06) set by Patty Kupstas!
Age-group competition was tough, especially on the female side with Erin Griffin squeezing out a six-second win over Karen McLaughlin in the 35-39 age group and Jen Heck taking the Masters title (and third overall) with a win over Jessica Chessman.
On the male side, the 50-54 age group was the most crowded with Lee Toussaint bearing George Dunbar.
This was the 35th running of this historic rate that starts and finishes at the Penn State campus. Continuing a long- term trend, there were almost as many women as men in this race. Perhaps, next year the women may be in the majority.
