KELLY CIRAVOLO CAPTURES
WOMEN’S RACE

Ciravolo with Big First Place Lead at Wyoming
Valley Striders’ Winter’s End Race

BY TOM WALSKI

LEHMAN, PA--Even though the Winter’s End race is held during the first weekend of spring, the weather is usually more winter-like. This year was no exception, with wind and temperatures just above freezing. The 4.5-mile race was held on Sunday, March 23.

John Martino returned to defend his title from 2013 and Bornfase Omura was there to defend his title from 2012. The two headed out with Chris Waznetsky, but Martino fell back after the first mile while Omura held on until roughly the halfway mark. While Waznetsky pulled away, Mickey Moorhead ran a strong second half of the race to move into second place.

There was little doubt about the women’s winner as Kelly Ciravolo coasted to a win by three minutes over defending champion Amy Rome, who had to settle for second place and the Masters title. Ciravolo was sixth overall in the 142 runner field that challenged the rolling hills around the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus.

JIM REHRIG TURNS IN A FAST
70+ TIME
As usual, this race featured some tight Masters competition. One of the better races was Max Furek overhauling rival Joe Dutko over the last quarter-mile to eke out a three-second win in the 65-69 age group. Jim Rerhrig’s 33:45 in the 70-and-over division was one of the best age-graded times.
