Wellsville Hosts 14th Annual
Ridgewalk & Run

BY BRENT BACON

WELLSVILLE, NY--Although Sunday, October 15 dawned dreary and cold with a few snowflakes spitting down, it did not dampen the enthusiasm of the participants. Over 900 people participated in the Fourteenth Annual Wellsville Ridgewalk & Run.

The Ridgewalk & Run is hosted by the Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce. Events include two-, six-, and nine-mile walks, in addition to a 5K and 10K run and a 14-mile Walk/Run through the scenic hills of Southern New York State’s Allegany County.

The grueling 14-mile trail has a total elevation gain of 2,000 feet through some of New York State’s most beautiful and rugged scenery. The overall winner for the men was Matthew Doyle from Rochester with a time of 2:06:41. First place overall for the women, with a time of 2:35:56, was Jane Vales from Arkport. Rich Shear commented, “The 14-mile walk/run has became a regional event and very competitive with 92 entries in the run and 48 walkers this year.” Rich is the Publicity Coordinator and the race ends on his farm, where there are large tents and a variety of food and drink supplied by supporters of the event. Leki has walking-pole demonstrations and there are many vendors and exhibits of various products.

The Ridgewalk & Run has become a weekend event and begins with a pre-event dinner on Saturday evening and featured keynote speaker Terry Schneider. Terry is an amazing world-class athlete and motivational speaker. For more information on Terry, see the Ridgewalk & Run Web site: www.ridgewalk.com

The whole event is quite a production when you consider there are seven events and over 900 entrants. Kudos to the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce volunteers on their hard work and success.

Mark your calendars for the next Ridgewalk & Run, on Sunday, October 21, 2007.
