McCubbin, WRRC Capture
Women's Distance Festival Awards

BY DAVE HERLOCKER

UNION MILLS, MD--Tina McCubbin, a resident of Taneytown and a member of the host Westminster Road Runners, led from wire to wire in winning the Women's Distance Festival 5K, held at the historic Union Mills Homestead on July 13.

On a surprisingly cool, but sunny, day, McCubbin moved to an early lead as the field of forty-eight runners, ranging in age from thirteen to sixty-nine, headed up the Old Hanover Road to the more shaded, but gradually rising, Deep Run Road. By the time she had reached the one-mile mark in 6:38, McCubbin--who had finished fourth in this race in 2002 and third in 2001--held a ten second advantage over Kristin Motter, who was running in her own neighborhood, with Robin Goodwin, recent local high school graduate Kim Daut, and Michele Reichert-Kiss trailing at five second intervals.

When she reached the end of the uphill portion of the out-and-back course, McCubbin accelerated, passing the one-mile-to-go mark in 14:12, good for a thirty-five second lead over Goodwin, who had passed Motter before the turnaround. Reichert-Kiss was in fourth at this point, eight seconds ahead of Daut.

At the finish line, McCubbin's time of 20:49 was twenty-seven seconds better than her time from last year and faster then the winning time of an all-male 5K held earlier that morning on the same course. Goodwin held on to second place, finishing sixteen seconds ahead of Reichert-Kiss, who overcame a ten second deficit in the final mile to finish ahead of Motter. Daut outkicked Laura Beck in the final 100 meters to finish fifth. Joan Nugent finished seventh as the first Masters runner.

With the first, fourth, and fifth finishers, the Westminster Road Runners won the team competition. The Baltimore Road Runners finished second, and the Montgomery County Road Runners finished third.
