Krebs Triumphs in
WDF Run

BY DAVE HERLOCKER

UNION MILLS, MD--Western Maryland College Cross-Country All-American Jill Krebs showed that she is fully recovered from her springtime bout with mononucleosis, as she captured the Women's Distance Festival 5K Run, sponsored by the Westminster Road Runners and held on July 16 at the Union Mills Homestead.

Leading the 46-runner field from the start, Krebs covered the first mile of the out-and-back course in 6:05, with North Carroll State Cross-Country Champion Colleen Lawson second in 6:20, closely followed by two-time Mt. Airy Flag Day Run winner Marty Kachman, former Olympic Trials 10,000-meter finalist Eleanor Simonsick, and North Carroll runner Kim Daut.

During the middle portion of the race, the Krebs lead kept growing, reaching 45 seconds over Kachman with a mile to go. Running a 6:10 final mile gave Krebs a finishing time of 19:15, setting a new race record for runners 19 and under. Kachman outran Simonsick for second and Lawson nipped Daut for fourth.

With Krebs, Lawson, and Daut in the top five, the Westminster Road Runners defended their title in the club competition, with the Baltimore Road Runners finishing second, and the Howard County Striders finishing third.
