Olsen Wins Stickman’s 5K

STRASBURG, VA--The 9th annual Stickman’s 5K was held Saturday, January 27 under sunny skies, but frigid temperatures. Eighty-three runners toed the starting line for this loop course which traverses a wooded path for about 100 yards just before the two-mile mark.

When the race began, three runners quickly separated themselves from the pack and raced together for the first mile. They were Robbie Olsen, Clint Schiavone, and Brad Rippey. As they began the long ¼-mile uphill section, Olsen quickly showed his strength as he moved to the front and never relinquished the lead, stopping the clock first at 17:47. Schiavone took second in 18:09 while Rippey took third finishing with a time of 18:16.

The women’s race was over at the start as Brenda Schrank jumped out to the lead and never looked back, finishing first with a time of 19:56, good for 9th overall. Finishing a distant second was Laura Nelson (21:21) while Tracy Rice (23:25) took third.

The trail section proved to be a bit harrowing as there was a fallen tree that you had to duck under and another fallen tree you had to stop and climb over. There were no reported head bumps from the 83 finishers!
