Hot Competition and Cool Course
at Somerset Fire & Ice 5K

BY GEORGE A. HANCOCK

SOMERSET, PA--The 7th Annual Somerset Fire & Ice 5K Walk/Run was held Saturday, January 17, 2004. This Saturday morning road course features mostly flat, and sometimes dry, streets through the Somerset community. There were 90 runners and 17 walkers who toured the wintry 5K road course.

Race-day morning was very cold. The starting line temperature was about 10 degrees. The cloud cover kept the morning temperatures from dropping below zero. The morning before, the temperatures were in the 2 to 4 below zero range.

Sam Sacksen won the 2004 Somerset Fire & Ice 5K race in 16:58. Brian Neuhoff placed second in 17:22, while Tom Deakins was a step behind in 17:23.

Dana Furdella was the top female runner in 19:53. Michele Wissinger finished second in 21:21. Cindy Palmer was third in 21:45.

Craig Baer was the overall male Walk finisher in 28:05. The first female 5K walker was Tammy Sandor in 35:12.

The overall finishing places are courtesy of The Somerset Daily American and the Dave Mapes Finish Line Service.
