DeMonico, Jaworowski Win Series Finale 5K;
Ciolfi, Jaworowski Capture Points Title

BY ELLIOTT DENMAN

OCEAN TOWNSHIP, NJ--Dave DeMonico of South River, a former track and cross-country star at Rutgers University, brought the Shore Athletic Club Year 2000 Winter Series of 5K races at Joe Palaia Park to a rousing conclusion with a course-record 15:59.8 victory on March 11.

DeMonico, a frequent winner on the statewide road-racing circuit, took an early lead in the race staged through a driving rain, and was never headed as he crashed through the 16-minute "barrier" despite the difficult conditions.

"If I can only stay healthy, I think I can have a pretty good year," said DeMonico, who has had to overcome a series of physical problems in past seasons.

The best previous time on the Joe Palaia Park 5K route this winter was the 16:31 clocked by Lou Raffetto, the former Ocean Township High School star now at Massachusetts' Bentley College, in the series opener staged on January 15.

Joyce Jaworowski of Jersey City, another consistent leader on the New Jersey racing scene, completed her clean sweep of women's Winter Series titles with a decisive 19:32 victory over Spring Lake Heights' Moira Horan.

Even though the Winter Series was battered by difficult weather conditions, Jaworowski was a model of even pace, winning in 19:10 on January 15, 18:45 on February 12, and 19:05 on February 26 to take the women's overall points championship.

While he placed second to DeMonico in 18:19, and never gained an overall victory, Dante Ciolfi of Parsippany ran off with the men's points title for the full series. He'd run third on January 15 and moved up to second on February 26.

"This is a great course, a real PR course, so you know I really like it," said Ciolfi, 44, a computer programmer who has career bests of 16:42 for 5K (as an Open division runner), 33:33 for 10K, and 2:35 for the marathon. In Masters division racing, he clocked a 2:45 in last year's Tucson Marathon in Arizona.
