Familiar Faces Show Their Stuff
at Paxton Fest Two-Mile Run

BY DARREL REINFORD

HARRISBURG, PA--It was a cool, breezy morning for the 7th Annual Paxton Fest Two-Mile Run, held September 29, but the nippy temperature didn't keep the runners away. A field of 157 runners completed this year's run, including many new and returning runners.

The men's and women's winners of the race were definitely familiar faces at the Paxton Fest Run. Mike Craighead took the overall win with a time of 9:28, while Misti Demko smashed the course record she set last year by 17 seconds, running the two miles in 10:19. This is the second win at the Paxton Fest Two-Mile Run for both Craighead and Demko.

One of the new faces at the race, Chris Miller, of Hummelstown, ran a strong race to finish second in 9:40. Greg Cauller, Paul Jones, and Ryan Blood rounded out the top five finishers. Ryan sneaked across the line just two seconds in front of his dad, Rick.

For the women, Amy Pyles and Maria Spinnler dueled for second place, with Amy winning the battle with a time of 10:48. Spinnler followed soon after, with Judy Cassel and Mandy Hoover coming in 4th and 5th, respectively, to also win cash prizes.

Our Masters winners this year were also return runners. Mitch Shaffer took the award for the men with a time of 10:28 and Yvonne Lodovici for the women in 14:14. Both received gift certificates to local restaurants. A total of 27 other age-group winners received gift certificates provided by the Inside Track, one of our many generous sponsors.

We were happy once again to have a number of church teams competing in the run. This year's winner was the King Street United Brethren Church from Chambersburg. This was the first Paxton Fest run for their team, and next year they will be known as the team to beat. The team from Carlisle Brethren in Christ Church came in second and last year's winner, Harrisburg Brethren in Christ, was third.

After the run, the participants were able to take advantage of the variety of food that is available at Paxton Fest, including pancakes and the ever-popular chicken-corn soup. They also received complimentary citrus sport drink provided by Imperial Beverage, Inc.

The Two-Mile Run is just the beginning of a day of festivities at Paxton Ministries that includes auctions, entertainment, craft vendors, and kids' activities. The proceeds from all the events benefit the ministry's work of providing supportive housing for poor and disadvantaged adults in Harrisburg.

As I reflect on the first Paxton Fest run that I have helped to coordinate, I am so grateful for all the sponsors, volunteers, and runners that have contributed to having a successful race. Special thanks go to: run co-director Henry Klugh, who provided lots of encouragement and practical advice; Kim Engle, the inaugural member of our first run planning committee who helped to spread the word about the run; and Steve Schwartz, who allowed me to ask him many questions about coordinating the run during our morning jogs, and who came out early on the day of the race to help set up. Look forward to seeing you at the Paxton Fest Two-Mile Run next year!
