Carlisle RC Dedicates Half-Marathon to Leroy Minich

BY PENNY GRAY

CARLISLE, PA--Amy Gulden, of Carlisle, and Larry Levy, of Reading, were the overall winners of the Minich Half-Marathon directed by the Carlisle Running Club on October 3, 1999. The Carlisle Half-Marathon was renamed by the Club to honor Leroy Minich, who passed away in December 1998. Minich was a dedicated runner and also officiated and timed many local road races, including the Carlisle High School Cross-Country meets. Leroy's wife, Ann, was on hand to start the race under cool, but sunny skies. As the runners toured the course they were cheered on by many of the cross-country team members as well as the Carlisle Running Club members who volunteered as course marshals, along with Leroy's daughter, Jesse. Both overall winners were in charge from the starting whistle and it was Larry Levy of Reading who crossed the line alone in 1:14:58. Amy Gulden of the Carlisle Running Club ran with Leroy's son, Curt Minich, for part of the race and then pulled away to clock a 1:33:08. As the runners gathered after the race, Leroy's family presented awards and mingled among the runners exchanging "Leroy stories" and personally thanking all who participated.
