Runners Celebrate Life of Leroy Minich
at Half-Marathon

CARLISLE, PA--The 2nd Annual Minich Half-Marathon, previously known as the Carlisle Half-Marathon, was held on Sunday, October 15, 2000. The race is named in honor of Leroy Minich, Carlisle Running Club member, who died in December 1998. Ann Minich, Leroy's wife, was on hand to start the race under a clear and cool morning sky. As the runners made their way over the rolling and scenic course, the temperature rose into the mid-sixties, making for almost ideal racing conditions. Carlisle Running Club's own Randy Hoon, of Mt. Holly Springs, captured the men's overall title with a 1:16:12. Hoon is a well-known Masters runner in the area and was a personal friend of Leroy's. He was soon followed across the line by Jeff Gates, of Boiling Springs, in 1:18:49.

For the second year in a row, Ami Gulden, of Carlisle and the Carlisle Running Club, took first place among women with a time of 1:36:22. Gulden is a former Carlisle High School cross-country runner and coach. It seems fitting that the proceeds of the race are donated to the Leroy Minich Spirit of Running Scholarship given annually to a deserving member of the Carlisle team.

One-hundred-and-six runners participated in this celebration of Leroy's love of running. The race starts with the runners shaking hands and introducing themselves to their fellow runners, in true Leroy fashion. After the race the runners are treated to bagels, fruit, and Domino's pizza, as well as being given a chance to win numerous random awards. Awards are then handed out by the Minich family, including Leroy's son, Curt, who participates in the race. The family of Leroy Minich and the Carlisle Running Club would like to thank all the sponsors, volunteers, and participants who helped make this year's race a huge success!
