Mifflinburg Magic

MIFFLINBURG, PA--Before heading to family picnics and fireworks, many runners kicked off their Fourth of July celebrations by participating in the 22nd annual Mifflinburg 5K Run and Half-Mile Youth Fun Run. The 5K drew 321 finishers who raced under sunny skies and much less humid conditions than in previous years.

The race, held at the Mifflinburg Community Park, was well organized by Race Director Don Bowman and numerous volunteers and sponsors. Splits were provided at the one-mile mark and volunteers were strategically placed along the paved roads to spray runners with a blast of cool water.

The first mile of the course was flat and fast, followed by a steady uphill halfway into the race. A water station at mid-course aided runners as they approached a downhill through the covered bridge and to the finish.

Ryan Blood of Summerdale captured the win in a blazing 15:50. Second place finisher, and previous winner, Chris Spooner of Lewisburg ran a 16:16, while Kip Hoffman of Watsontown earned the third spot in 16:33. Shawn Lively of West Milton grabbed fourth in 16:48, followed by Rick Blood of Summerdale in 17:15.

For the women, Becki McClintock of Harrisburg set a strong pace, winning with a time of 18:30. Ashleigh Wetzel of Lewisburg was the second female in 18:49 and Wendy Wood of McEwensville finished third in 19:23. Fourth and fifth place finishes, respectively, went to Hilary Roth of Elysburg in 19:44 and Ashley Shuck of Milton in 19:45.

The event was a success, and runners were supplied with spring water provided by Tulpehocken Spring Water and high quality T-shirts. Ample amounts of oranges and watermelon slices were available in the park pavilion.

The race reached new heights this year, featuring 331 registrants (compared to 323 last year) and 20 more pre-registrants. The event also included 49 Corporate Games participants.

“The day was perfect with low humidity,” Bowman said. “We had incredible support and have a lot of fun doing [the race].”

The sponsors of the race included Mifflinburg Bank and Trust Co., Green Ridge Graphics, D&E Communications, Farm and Home Oil Co., McDonald’s of Mifflinburg, The Daily Item, Evangelical Sports Medicine, and Kuhns Bros. Log Homes, Inc.

“The sponsors keep supporting us,” Bowman said. “We couldn’t do what we do without the sponsors.”

In addition, there were several volunteers from Mifflinburg High School’s Key Club and National Honor Society. The proceeds from the event go to the Fourth of July Committee, which began in 1972 to supply fireworks and entertainment.

Bowman said that the proceeds go right back into the community to provide activities and to get quality premiums and awards for winners. Overall male and female winners received the Tom Muchler Memorial Award and a gift certificate from W.L. Donehower Sporting Goods of Lewisburg.

The postrace activities featured a pet parade, games, and numerous activities in the park. To top off the celebration, the Mifflinburg Community Pool provided free admission to runners and their families. What a great way to cool off and spend Independence Day with family and friends!
